Personal statement

I received a sound foundation in art education, but it was a very skills based training including botanical drawing. I consider my most formative education to have come in more recent years from working with the Middlesex artist Jill Confavreaux. Jill introduced me to working with a much wider range of media and techniques, and encouraged me to work much more creatively and personally. I live and teach in Wiltshire, but as a child lived in rural Herefordshire. Throughout my life the countryside has always been a place of fascination, pleasure, awe and wonder. It will always be my constant source of inspiration when painting.
I work largely with acrylics, inks and pastels, using a wide range of techniques. Natural objects usually act as a stimulus, and I work quite freely initially. During the process the suggestion of an image will emerge. It frequently evokes memories of paces from my childhood or places that I like to walk now. At this point in the process I shift focus into defining the image. I have been publicly exhibiting my work since the summer of '94, when I undertook a solo exhibition in King Street in Bristol. Since then I have generally exhibited my work in Bath, Chippenham, and Devizes, but also took part in an exhibition of British Artists in Mayenne in France.
Finally, while my work remains very personal to me I hope that these images will also actively evoke memories and be a source of pleasure to you and others.
